Business as usual for Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal
Ferguson and director Sir Bobby Charlton were known to have doubts about Mourinho, but they will have only a minor say in who succeeds Van Gaal should he be axed.

Manchester United are preparing to sack Louis van Gaal before replacing him with Ryan Giggs, according to Norwegian journalist Jan Aage Fjortoft.
Carragher went on to suggest the prospect of Pep Guardiola joining Manchester City next summer may prompt United to ignore any doubts over Mourinho and take a chance on the proven trophy victor.
Under-fire Van Gaal has given a rousing speech to his players during the annual Christmas lunch at the club’s training ground.
With less than half the season gone, the prospect of the former winger taking charge for such a long time, even on an interim basis, could mean that the Reds struggle for a place in this season’s top four and run the risk of not qualifying for the Champions League for the second time in three years.
United are acutely aware of Mourinho’s strengths but also mindful about the amount of conflict he tends to generate, as well as his reluctance to promote younger players.
Tellingly, Spanish winger Juan Mata struggled to find an upbeat note when he talked on Monday of the complicated and tough situation United find themselves in.
“We all feel frustrated, same as last week, and we need to win a game as quickly as possible because it will change our mood and give us confidence, I’m sure of that”.
Former Manchester United player and current assistant to Louis Van Gaal, Ryan Giggs is another person that has been linked to the job.
“I believe that’s the only way to get out of this bad streak – keep working hard and sooner or later we will get the results that we want”.
Van Gaal’s position has been substantially weakened but, for now, he is trying to continue as normal.
And unfortunately for van Gaal, circumstances have conspired to make two of the most desirable managers in the world available at the exact moment he is at his lowest ebb.

Despite Mourinho’s blue-chip track record, notwithstanding his disastrous last season at Chelsea, the Glazers are still to be convinced by the former Porto, Internazionale and Real Madrid coach’s suitability for the United job.
