Business As Usual — The Golden Globes

Trumbo topped that list with three nods, including best ensemble cast and best lead actor for Bryan Cranston. Then again, they entirely blew it by putting “The Martian” as a comedy/musical. It will compete against The Big Short, Trainwreck, Joy, and Spy. “Til then, we’ve got a month to accept the Globes’ oddities for what they are: a double-edged sword with as much power to elevate underdogs as shut out the deserving”.

“We’ve just heard about the nomination and just like our film, we’re speechless”, says Richard Starzak and Mark Burton, writers and directors of Shaun the Sheep Movie. That’s a significant elevation in rank from previous year, when Netflix came in fourth with seven nominations. Will Smith did too (for Concussion). And Mad Max received a best drama and a best director nomination.

SNUB: Tom Hanks, “Bridge of Spies” After losing out on a SAG and Globe nomination, Hanks will probably be sidelined at the Oscars as well. Its nominations for best picture drama (over “Brooklyn”) and best director for George Miller shows that the Warner Bros. summer tentpole has staying power. If I’m thinking about myself as a black dude that got nominated, I magnetise the negativity that comes around that separation.

Quentin Tarantino’s “The Hateful Eight” also got left out in the cold.

Aaron Sorkin- Nominee for Best Screenplay – Motion Picture “Steve Jobs”: “Thank you, HFPA, for this personal honor, and for all four nominations for STEVE JOBS”.

Rami Malek, 34, earned a best actor nod for playing a cybersecurity expert with social anxiety on cable network USA’s best drama series nominee Mr. Robot.

Here’s a breakdown of some of the most noteworthy bits from today’s big nominations reveal.

The Globes, chosen by a group of around 90 journalists of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association rather than members of the film industry, have separate categories for comedy and drama and can include a wider array of films.

But if Oscar forecasters are looking to sift through Globe tea leaves, there appear to be few sure things. A four-time Oscar nominee and one-time Globe victor, DiCaprio is gunning for his first Academy Award. The Revenant is due for release December 25.

Aussie apocalyptic blockbuster Mad Max: Fury Road, revenge thriller The Revenant and harrowing kidnap tale Room and Spotlight have also been nominated for the best motion picture drama award.

In the comedy category, “Joy” star Jennifer Lawrence also has a chance to win best actress prize along with Amy Schumer, Maggie Smith, Lily Tomlin, and Melissa McCarthy. He is battling it out against Idris Elba, Mark Rylance, and Michael Shannon.

Redmayne’s “Danish Girl” co-star Alicia Vikander earned a Best Actress nomination, along with a Best Supporting Actress nomination for “Ex-Machina”. Carol, the romantic drama film directed by Todd Haynes is leading the board.

Comedian Aziz Ansari earned an acting nod for his new series “Master of None”, and Ben Mendelsohn is up for a best supporting actor prize for family drama series “Bloodline”.

Six streaming series from online venues Netflix, Amazon and Hulu were the heavy nominees for TV awards.

SURPRISE: Lady Gaga, “American Horror Story” No offense to Gaga’s glam turn as a vampy seductress on the most gonzo installment to date of FX’s anthology series “American Horror Story”, but awards buzz for her work hasn’t exactly been deafening. She tweeted that she probably woke her Manhattan neighbors.

The Golden Globe nominations showed it’s anyone’s game this year.

Denzel Washington will receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award for making an “incredible impact on the world of entertainment”. And the film didn’t exactly wow critics.

The Globes’ tweets have since been deleted.

The nominees for the 2016 Golden Globes were announced this morning, and as usual it’s a mixture of artistic appreciation and blatant pandering, as the HFPA bends over backwards to invite as many shiny people to their party as they can.
