The decision by Great Britain’s Davis Cup team to mark a first title in 79 years with criticism of Michael Downey and the LTA was unconventional, but not altogether unexpected.
Andy led the team to victory on Monday during an emotional win where he beat Belgium’s David Goffin in straight sets to secure the trophy for the Britain, giving them a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five match final.
Mr Cameron praised the team from the official Number 10 Twitter account during their visit to his headquarters on Tuesday but those manning the account mistakenly referred to the competition as the “David Cup”.
This is not the first sporting own goal to be associated with the Prime Minister.
Former British Davis Cup captain John Lloyd opened a new front in the debate by accusing the powers at the All England Club – responsible for the Wimbledon championships – of failing to get involved enough in wider British tennis.
The Scot revealed he has only spoken to chief executive Michael Downey once since the Canadian took over as chief executive at the start of a year ago.
The 28-year-old sportsman has plenty to celebrate as he awaits the arrival of his first child with wife Kim Sears and he has also been named on the 12-person shortlist for the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year Award.
“I spoke to him a little bit there”.

“I need to train really hard in the off-season if I want to have a chance of making this count. That’s also the reality”.
