Opener Jason Roy also scored century (102) in 150 balls and anchored his side’s innings with Joe Root, who scored 71. He holds the record for the fastest ODI ton by an Englishman (top three spots are his) and the seventh fastest in the world.

England took 79 from the last five overs alone, Buttler finishing with eight maximums and 10 fours, and although Pakistan began their innings aggressively, David Willey (2-34) soon removed the recalled Ahmed Shehzad (13) and Azhar (44).

His century off forty six deliveries broke his personal England report and he hit eight sixes – one other national greatest – and 10 fours.

Yorkshire’s Bairstow, who has a highest score of 95 and averages 26.40, played six successive Tests as a specialist batsman before taking over behind the stumps for the third Test in Sharjah.

After Sarfraz had turn out to be Rashid’s third sufferer for twenty-four and Moeen Ali caught and bowled Wahab Riaz for one, Pakistan’s process turned virtually inconceivable and Moeen sealed an emphatic England victory together with his third wicket.

Poor Jason Roy – on any other day his maiden one-day hundred for England would have been top of the bill.

“Certainly, [it was] the best one-day knock I’ve ever seen in an England shirt”.

With ODI series wins against New Zealand and Pakistan along with a closely contested campaign against Australia, England have surely made the right moves in the limited overs format.

Azhar Ali dismissed Root in the next over with his part-time legspin, and it was then upto the likes of Buttler, Eoin Morgan, and James Taylor to build from the solid platform they had.

Buttler said the knock was satisfying after being dropped from the Test series following the second match at the same ground.

“But we all realise the importance of this game so we will do our hardest work to win and I am confident that if we play to our ability then we can definitely win this game”.

As it was, Roy and Root added a vital 140 runs for the second wicket to set the tone. Roy’s hundred came soon after, but so did his wicket, in the 36th over, when attempting to launch Yasir (1-57) over long-on but his shot not having the legs to clear the fielder.

Jos Buttler’s brilliant 46-ball hundred left his England team-mates speechless as they watched his sustained power-hitting and ingenious deflections from the dressing room.
