Button: F1 safety has gone backwards at Baku

It’s supposed to be the other way round. Turn 7 has three Tecpro barriers and then a concrete barrier at the edge of the circuit.

“The problem is that you can’t move the buildings”.

“Hopefully they have done their tests”.

The run-off area is a safety net for drivers if they make a mistake at high speed, or suffer a mechanical fault such as a tyre blow-out.

Lewis Hamilton has taken aim at his rivals by accusing them of “moaning” and “wanting to take all the character and life” out Formula One after a number of leading drivers expressed their safety concerns on the eve of the inaugural race in Azerbaijan.

Asked about the pit-lane layout, Button added: “It’s like we’ve gone backwards in certain areas, I don’t know why”.

“We listen, obviously, and if people have got a genuine complaint there is not a lot we can do, because in all fairness I think you would get into trouble in most countries if you were very, very anti some government or political people, or in fact anybody, so it is not quite as easy as that”.

“I do like the layout, I think it is exciting in some places but there are just some things that look like they need to be addressed”.

The bit I don’t like is a few corners. Ahead of the weekend the corners around the Old City – Turns 8, 9 and 10 – received the most attention due to the way the circuit narrows, but Button’s concern is with the run off area on the exit of some of the corners with heavy braking zones.

Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo said the pit entry “is going to be quite cool” because, as it is effectively part of the race track, there was “between half-a-second and a second” for a driver to gain in the chicane.

But this has led to several drivers airing their concerns.

“So, that’s not great and we need to see how it goes – there’s that corner, what is it, 14 or something, before going down the hill, where you’ve got a wall straight on”.

Rosberg hoped governing body the FIA had stuck to the safety guidelines that govern tracks, but added: “I’m doubting it a little because of those corners”.

However, the entry to the pit lane has also under the spotlight. “And I certainly have the plan to stay on track and not use the run-off or the off-track”.

“Two weeks ago I was at the Isle of Man looking at the TT [motorbike race] and I found it very spectacular”, he said.

But Rosberg countered: “Yeah but there is also a massive accident to be had if you go a little bit more than that”.
