BWW Review: insane EX-GIRLFRIEND, Starring Rachel Bloom & Santino Fontana, is

However, after the pilot was shot, Showtime decided not to pick up the show to series, only for their sister network, The CW, to swoop in and order an hour-long version a few months later.

“Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” is a musical comedy vehicle that manages to be both emotionally hefty and light on its feet, with credit due to zippy writing; the wickedly, sometimes raunchily amusing music videos woven into each episode, and its leading lady’s magnetism. “You didn’t even break your skin and you inconvenienced a lot of people”.

And when it comes to the empowered-woman pop song that Rachel Bloom is performing, something is definitely amiss.

Fans won’t have to wait long for Rebecca’s craziness to surface either – her demented tendencies start showing themselves right away in the premiere episode titled, “Josh Just Happens to Live Here!” when she turns down a partner position at her NYC law firm in exchange for the beach life of California. This makes it a flawless pairing for Jane the Virgin, another series whose name belied the level of quality story and humor within, and which also uses its heightened universe to tell an engaging story about women and relationships. He offers her a bunch of compliments and his phone number, which is all the impetus Rebecca needs to turn down the promotion and relocate to West Covina – or, as she calls it, “where dreams live”.

Because why would someone move to West Covina, a land of sports bars and strip malls, when they have the opportunity to live in New York?

Think of it as a rom-com skewed to the dark side, Bloom suggests, created by two feminists whose ambitious goal is to take the stereotypical phrase of its title and “deconstruct” it.

This is familiar territory for Brosh McKenna.

“You can go “crazy ex-girlfriend” on a work thing, trying to get a job, or trying to get an apartment or trying to buy a house”, Brosh McKenna said.

Said Bloom: “It’s nearly a comment, really, on romantic comedies”.

I don’t know if Bloom and McKenna will be able to continue operating at this high level-The CW only sent the pilot for review-but I’m going to enjoy watching them try because insane Ex-Girlfriend was as fresh and imaginative as they come. Adds Bloom: “I’ve put everything into this”. In fact, it was through Bloom’s YouTube videos that Brosh McKenna first discovered the singer/writer/actress. But while Jane is often the equivalent of a warm embrace following the incredible rush of a roller coaster ride, insane Ex-Girlfriend feels more like a show that will slap viewers in the face before offering that kind of sincerity. Bloom has been making hilarious music videos for years like “Nobody Will Watch the F*cking TONY AWARDS with Me” and “Historically Accurate Disney Princess Song” amongst many others.

Yep, the entire reason Rebecca transplanted her entire life is taken. She moved to New York and studied at NYU where she was the head writer and director of the school’s sketch comedy group Hammerkatz.
