BYU football video: Two plays that shifted momentum squarely in Cougars’ favor

BYU’s third drive of the first half ended with Samson missing a 47-yard field goal attempt, snapping Samson’s streak of nine consecutive made field goals.

On Friday night the UConn Huskies and BYU Cougars will face off against one another in a match-up of two schools trying to get over the. On the Huskies’ ensuing possession, blitzing junior safety Kai Nacua forced Shirreffs to throw an errant pass that was intercepted by senior defensive end Bronson Kaufusi. The Cougars were on the move with around four minutes left in the half, but Mangum’s ill-fated decision to throw a deep ball when he had plenty of other options underneath was snared by UConn’s Jhavon Williams. UConn’s Andrew Adams already has 34 tackles and two interceptions and he will be looking to see if BYU QB Tanner Mangum makes any mistakes.

After BYU dominated the first half, but had to settle for a 7-7 tie, the teams exchanged field goals in the third quarter. The Cougars bounced back before their drive stalled at the Huskies’ 8 and Samson booted a tying 26-yard field goal with 3:02 remaining in the quarter.BYU struck first when true freshman running back Francis Bernard capped a 12-play, 87-yard drive with a 1-yard plunge with 2:44 remaining in the first quarter.

The Huskies, meanwhile, won their two first games as well. The second pass proved costly for the Cougars as sophomore linebacker Sione Takitaki was called for roughing the passer. On the next play, BYU lost Arkeel Newsome in coverage allowing the sophomore tailback to catch a 30-yard touchdown pass in front of the BYU sideline to tie the game at 7 woth 1:42 left in the half.
