Before Manuel’s performance Thursday night, the American women’s gymnastics team made a profound statement on an worldwide stage.

The significance of Simone Manuel’s victory rests not just with yet another swimming gold for the United States or another mark in the overall medal tally. In doing so, she joined the ranks of other blacks who were the first to win gold medals at the Olympics, including Wilma Rudolph, Gabby Douglas, Alice Coachman, Zina Garrison and Vonetta Flowers.

Mom didn’t have an answer.

“This medal is not just for me”, she said after the race. So it makes sense why Manuel has a very practical desire for her influence on younger generations. “I love that she has made history”, she added.

“She’s the first and hopefully, she won’t be the last”, he says.

Lourdes knows exactly what she wants to do.

We are lucky that Manuel doesn’t spend a lot of time worrying about her hair. No, she recovered from a poor start in the 100-meter freestyle, blazed at the turn and won gold. She was staying off her phone that froze up because of an overload of text messages and calls. I love watching her swim, absolutely love it.

She also touched on the how she wants the Olympics to help ease the heightened racial tensions in the U.S. “She would like to be recognized for her merits and dedication”. No one understood better than she the pressure that rested on her 20-year-old shoulders.

It was posted on the newspaper’s website about 9:45 p.m. and quickly removed and replaced with one carrying Manuel’s name with Phelps. “The title “black swimmer” makes it seem like I am not supposed to be able to win a gold medal, I am not supposed to be able to break records”.

The children were terrified to be near the water, much less in it. Manuel learned Mandarin as a result.

After that blazing display of speed, Italy’s Paltrinieri showed off his endurance in pool swimming’s longest event as he pulled away from the field to capture the 1,500 free.

Meanwhile, USA Swimming hosts diversity camps, has developed community partnerships with city departments in diverse areas and has a diversity coach mentorship program. Then, upon realizing she had won, her jaw went slack. She remains undefeated in major global individual events.

The U.S. Women’s Gymnastics team aren’t just winning, but dominating in Rio.

The pressure was beyond taking gold back home.

Manuel and her parents have had many conversations about what her swimming can and will mean in terms of the African-American community at large.

The USA entered the Rio Games with 977 golds, a number that was slightly in dispute. For the next few decades, swimming role models were white, such as swimmer and actress Esther Williams, who was often featured in synchronized swimming scenes in elaborate Hollywood films. Black children are three times more likely to drown than their peers.

It is a victory for the many black girls who have endured being stereotyped and ridiculed, who have been mocked and criticized for being too concerned with their hair-factors such as pool access, finances and white supremacist beauty standards erased in order to perpetuate racist and dishonest narratives.
