Cab driver may have been involved in Ryan Lochte robbery, report says

The Australian Olympic Committee has banned its athletes from two of Rio’s most popular beaches during the evenings after the armed robbery of Olympic medalist Ryan Lochte and three other USA swimmers.

He said that the robbers told them to get down on the ground but he refused.

The International Olympic Committee initially denied that the robbery took place, but the U.S. Olympic Committee confirmed the crime and the details of what was taken from the swimmers. That’s evidently false, though, and Lochte’s interview will be airing on The Today Show tomorrow.

Lochte, 32, was targeted alongside his teammates Gunnar Bentz, Jimmy Feigen and Jack Conger by thieves purporting to be police officers.

Lochte’s mother, Ileana, told USA Today and Fox Sports Australia that his wallet was taken and she learned of the incident through a text from her son. “I was asked to get an update from USOC, I got an update from USOC, I gave you USOC’s update and there was another one after that”.

All four athletes were safe and cooperating with authorities, the Olympic Committee said.

The first days of these Games defied all dire predictions.

“The police are looking for the cab driver who drove them back, who seemed to have more information about this”, Andrada said. Wlodarczyk, who took silver in the event at the London 2012 Games, said the athletes struggled to cope with the heat inside the Olympic Stadium. Last week, a Brazilian security officer was fatally shot after taking a wrong turn into a risky slum.

United States’ Ryan Lochte and three teammates were robbed at gunpoint at the Rio Olympics.

The window of a media van was smashed by an unidentified object, and two stray bullets were found at the equestrian site.

“Rio is an fantastic city”, he said.

So the Rio Games lurched into their second week accompanied by a growing sense of unease and caution, the story of four Americans celebrating a night on the town only serving to confirm their ever-present air of vulnerability.

“We just came off an wonderful performance”, he said. “I put my hands up, and was like, ‘Whatever.'” The gunmen stole their cash and wallets, he said.

The heavy presence of armed police on the city’s streets is making tourists feel safe despite Lochte’s mugging, CNN’s Marilia Brocchetto reported.
