Cabrera singles in 9th, White Sox beat Tigers 5-4

But thanks to Melky Cabrera’s RBI single in the bottom of the ninth, Robertson and the White Sox were winners for the second time Sunday, 5-4 at U.S. Cellular Field.

All the White Sox activism hasn’t translated to inspired play; they entered Sunday 47-50 on the year.

Cameron Maybin had two hits and scored two runs for Detroit. Or at least the threads the White Sox planned to wear on Saturday. No team in baseball had performed the feat on the same day since the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Chicago Cubs with two walk-off hits on May 28, 2004.

Adam Eaton drove in Avisail Garcia with a game-ending single in the ninth inning to lift the White Sox to a 4-3 victory on Sunday in a game that was suspended the previous night because of rain.

“Baseball is amusing like that”, Eaton said. It’s a love-hate relationship, for sure. They’ve been in a tailspin ever since, but they at least got a bit of a break after dropping eight of nine. Robertson came in to get the final out in a pouring rain before the umpires called for the tarp, and he was back on the mound when the game resumed the following afternoon. He would not say if Sale will pitch during the game.

The White Sox suspended their ace five days without pay for destroying collared throwback uniforms the team was scheduled to wear. White Sox senior vice president and general manager Rick Hahn said, “Chris has been suspended for violating team rules, for insubordination, and for destroying team equipment”. He was supposedly upset because the old throwback jerseys the White Sox were wearing on that day, had massive coller issues. Robertson, who earned the win in the first game of the day and also pitched before Saturday night’s game was suspended, allowed solo homers to Nick Castellanos, Tyler Collins and Jarrod Saltalamacchia.

Eaton led off the bottom half with a walk against Bruce Rondon (3-2), moved up on a sacrifice by Tim Anderson and came around on Cabrera’s sharp single to left.

Detroit’s Andrew Romine hit a solo drive off Nate Jones in the eighth. He settled down after Eaton went deep, but his future in the rotation is uncertain with Daniel Norris (oblique) and Jordan Zimmerman (neck) working their way back from injuries.

When news first broke that Sale was pulled from Saturday’s game, many speculated it had to do with rumors that the White Sox were planning to trade him.

But Jose Quintana’s latest gem went for naught when David Robertson blew the save in the ninth, giving up a three-run lead over the Tigers on three solo home runs.

Tigers left fielder Justin Upton leaped to rob Abreu of a home run in the third inning.

The Chicago White Sox were set to wear throwback uniforms.

White Sox: LHP Carlos Rodon (wrist) is scheduled to make a rehab start for Triple-A Charlotte on Monday.

Tigers: Manager Brad Ausmus said no decision has been made on whether LHP Norris will rejoin the team Monday in Boston. Starter Matt Boyd gave up three runs and five hits in 4 1/3 innings, and the Tigers came up short after getting a break by not facing the 14-game victor Sale. The White Sox recalled RHP Anthony Ranaudo from Triple-A Charlotte to fill Sale’s roster spot.
