Cadbury’s Fruit and Nut bar recipe changes after 90 years

The initiative to lower the added sugar in Kind Fruit & Nut bars is the company’s latest in an ongoing effort to create snacks that are both wholesome and delicious.

Sultanas might be a controversial choice, but the company have denied their addition is a ploy to combat the rising price of cocoa by bulking out the bar and promise a product with the exact same chocolate content as before.

Starting in late spring, select KIND Fruit & Nut bars like Apple Cinnamon & Pecan and Almonds & Apricots in Yogurt, will contain between 15 and 50 percent less added sugar, compared to the prior recipes. The planned change for the iconic chocolate bar, which was launched in 1926, is created to add “variety” to the bar, according to Cadbury’s.

The report in Mirror states when 200 adults were put to test, most couldn’t tell the difference between raisins and sultanas. The older recipe bars will be phased out over the next few months as new stock arrives in shops.

The new version of the chocolate bar will reportedly be available in your nearest store by the end of November. “It’s important we have a flexible supply of the dried fruit we use in our famous Fruit and Nut bars to both retain quality and ensure it’s still an affordable treat”, a spokesperson for the company told The Independent.

But millions of diehard Fruit and Nut cases are expected to clear shelves of the popular, original bar in a bid to stockpile their favourite treat.

Chocolate expert Dom Ramsey, editor of blogging website Chocablog, said only “hardcore Fruit and Nut fans will notice a flavour difference”.

“Eating sugar in excess, as many Americans now do, is unhealthy, particularly when it is in the form of added sugar or artificial sweeteners versus the naturally-occurring sugar that you find in fruit”, said David L. Katz, MD, MPH, FACPM, FACP, Director of the Yale University Prevention Research Center and Senior Nutrition Advisor to KIND.
