Cailee Spaeny to Play Female Lead in Pacific Rim 2
Pacific Rim 2 was said to be “indefinitely delayed” past year (15) as del Toro and his team required more time to develop the plot, but he then stepped down from the director’s chair in February (16), handing over the reins to DeKnight.

Plot details are vague on this pic other than Boyega playing the son of Elba’s character, who sacrificed his life in the original film.
John Boyega might now have his drift-compatible partner: Pacific Rim 2 has officially cast Australian actress Cailee Spaeny as its female lead. In June, it was reported that Scott Eastwood (Suicide Squad) was being considered for a lead role, and now Variety is saying he is part of the cast.
Spaeny’s name may not be a familiar one for most readers; the young up-and-comer has only two acting credits to her name so far, appearing in the indie films Counting to 1000 and The Shoes.
The film is being produced by Thomas Tull, Mary Parent, Jon Jashni, and Guillermo del Toro, as well as Boyega and Femi Oguns under their Upper Room Productions shingle. The film, often known as Pacific Rim: Maelstrom, is still largely wrapped in secrecy, though you can expect more of the massive robots vs. hulking Kaiju conflict we all enjoyed last time around. Cale Boyter will serve as the film’s executive producer.

Elba featured in Guillermo del Toro’s original blockbuster alongside Charlie Hunnam, Max Martini and Ron Perlman, who are each rumoured to be returning for the monster movie sequel, set for release in February, 2018.
