Cal Fire: Soberanes Fire began with illegal campfire

Hundreds of additional homes are being evacuated or placed under alert as strong winds threaten to spread a Montana wildfire that’s already destroyed at least 14 homes.
Firefighters have gained 50 percent containment of the fire that has burned about 22 square miles on private land and in Shoshone National Forest.
“In some locations the fire is still actively burning at night”, Cal Fire spokesman Don Jaques said Tuesday.
In Bridger-Teton National Forest, a fire that has burned about 46 square miles was 84 percent contained. The massive Soberanes fire is approaching the two-week mark in Big Sur and the Carmel Valley, and it has now scorched 45,800, and meanwhile a new fire broke out Tuesday near Winters and Lake Berryessa, in Yolo County.
A 65-square-mile wildfire in wilderness just north of Los Angeles was nearly fully contained as isolated pockets of vegetation burned.
Shelters have been set up for people and livestock from about two dozen evacuated residences.
The fires have charred more than 93 square miles of scrub brush in the Virginia Mountains, about 40 miles north of Reno.
The Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe town of Sutcliffe is no longer threatened, but residents in some rural areas have been told to prepare to evacuate quickly if necessary. Three structures and 2 outbuildings have been damaged.
With the fire now largely hemmed in on its northern flank, closest to communities that were threatened, the blaze is moving primarily in a southeasterly direction deeper into the Los Padres National Forest, Scott said.
Flames destroyed six houses and mobile homes, two vehicles and several out-buildings at historic Hardscrabble Ranch, according to Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribal officials.
Crews will continue to work to return service and rebuild infrastructure as safely and as quickly as possible, PG&E officials said.
The 4.5-square-mile blaze started Saturday afternoon in steep, rugged terrain.
Wildfires are raging in several Western states, with some fueled by wind and dry conditions.
Officials say slightly cooler weather and winds Wednesday should help firefighters trying to prevent flames from reaching the small town of Lowman.
It’s now mapped at 10.25 square miles in a wilderness study area about 20 miles northwest of Gerlach.

Officials say the 12-square-mile fire in the Bitterroot National Forest is partially contained, but they don’t expect to have it fully under control until the end of the month.
