Calgary man charged after flying in a lawn chair attached to balloons

Though he’s potentially facing federal charges for violating controlled airspace, Boria stands by his decision.

The floating object was not a balloon seller but Daniel Bora – who apparently was planning on promoting his cleaning products company All Clean National by parachuting into a rodeo event, the Calagary Stampede.

Though he planned to descend to the Stampede Park, Boria instead made a touchdown several kilometers away on an industrial field in southeast Calgary, where he was arrested and charged with causing danger to life.

Boria “may have” broken his ankle in the fall, but remained magnanimous, even optimistic, about the whole thing: “We did everything we could to make it as safe to the general public as possible”, he said. He was detained by police Sunday evening and released on Monday.

Over the weekend, Daniel Boria of Calgary, Canada, went on a joyride high above the clouds while resting comfortably in a lawn chair, parachuted himself back on the ground and got arrested, all in just a few hours.

“I did anticipate they would be a little upset”, he said of the police reaction.

He said the stunt cost him about Dollars 20,000, including hiring an airplane to circle the Stampede grounds with a banner advertising his company.

“I rose to a certain altitude and the winds got pretty intense”.

The 26-year-old said at one point he looked up to see some of the multi-coloured helium balloons popping and the $20 chair he was sitting on starting to shake. He said the whole experience “was insane…You’re just by yourself up above the clouds”. After all, if you could tie balloons to your house like in the movie Up, wouldn’t you at least start with a lighter material like a lawn chair in real life?

Walters was lucky. In 2008, a Catholic priest in Brazil disappeared in a cluster ballooning accident after taking off in a chair attached to 1,000 balloons.
