Officers transported Hicks to the hospital in life-threating condition, but he later died as a result of his injuries.
Police said they have a suspect in custody.
Hicks was signed as a member of the Stampeders’ practice squad on May 19, 2016.
Hicks signed with the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers as an undrafted free agent in May 2015 before being released at the end of training camp.
He played at Renaissance and participated in the 2010 Offense-Defense All-American Bowl in SC and was among the nation’s top cornerbacks.
Hicks graduated from Detroit Renaissance and was in the 2010 MSU recruiting class along with classmate Lawrence Thomas. Calgary Stampeders staff confirmed he was killed “in an act of violence” this morning.
Team president and general manager John Hufnagel added to the press release, saying, “Obviously this is an extremely hard and upsetting time for the players and staff”.
The loss of this 23-year-old young man at this stage of his life and his career is an unfathomable tragedy, said King.
Hicks is the second recent former Michigan State player to die this year. He recorded 27 tackles in 32 career games with the Spartans.
