California couple had been radicalized before shootings, FBI says

“Two followers of Islamic State attacked several days ago a center in San Bernardino”, media reports quoted the ISIS broadcast as saying.

Federal investigators continued trying to establish what pushed the couple to carry out what appears to be the deadliest attack on American soil by Islamic extremists since 9-11.

Among the 14 victims of last week’s shooting was 27-year-old Yvette Velasco, a regular at St. Catherine of Siena Church in Rialto, California.

The limited salary of a county employee has aroused suspicion that the cache of weapons found in the couple’s Redlands apartment – including pipe bombs and ammunition – may have been purchased with funds from a foreign source, McCaul said.

Farook was a USA citizen.

Malik, a Pakistani who officials said spent much of her life in Saudi Arabia arrived on a “fiancé” visa, which allowed Farook to petition for her entry ahead of marriage.

Bowdich said investigators were examining a Facebook posting in which Malik is believed to have pledged allegiance to IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, made around the time of the attack. She then married Farook and moved to the United States.

“The thought of we are going to go, we’re next, we are going to die right now was so terrifying to all of us”, says Regina Kuruppu.

On Monday, two employees who had been in the room during the attack on a holiday luncheon said colleagues tried to do just as they had been trained – drop under the tables and stay quiet so as not to attract attention. Bowdich would not address that question. “I don’t want to speculate”. We may find it some day, we may not. He says the bureau doesn’t know when or whether anyone else radicalized them. Authorities have however said there is no indication the couple were part of an organized larger group or cell.

Malik attended a religious school in the Pakistani city of Multan briefly between 2013 and 2014 but didn’t receive a diploma, Farhat Hashmi, founder of Al-Huda International Seminary, said in a statement on her website. After he spoke some more, Varney said that while he could tell Peters was “super angry”, he shouldn’t use such language. San Bernardino County Sheriff John McMahon talks to reporters during a news conference Friday, Dec. 4, 2015, in San Bernardino, Calif. The FBI said Friday it is officially investigating the mass shooting in California as an act… The killings have also baffled neighbours of the couple, who had a six-month-old daughter. Officials have said the infant has since been placed in protective custody.

They included two handguns and a rifle purchased legally by Farook, and two assault-style rifles purchased legally by an acquaintance of Farook’s, named Enrique Marquez.

Marquez hasn’t been charged with a crime, and it’s unclear if he did anything illegal. Federal law enforcement sources told Reuters that Marquez, considered a key witness in the probe, had checked himself into a Los Angeles-area psychiatric facility in the immediate aftermath of the shooting. Obama said in his weekly address that the Islamic State and other terrorist groups “are actively encouraging people – around the world and in our country – to commit awful acts of violence, often times as lone wolf actors”.
