A football player on the Mount San Antonio College team has been arrested after allegedly punching a referee in the middle of a game against Ventura College on Saturday.
Schirmer was immediately ejected from the game, and arrested on suspicion of battery of a game official. He was then taken to Ventura County jail, Sgt. Mike Pallotto of the Ventura College Police Department. He was released on bail early Sunday morning.
“This basically ruins his career”, he said. The official’s name has not been released, and the severity of the damage is still unknown.
“I talked to him yesterday. The young man was really just trying to get himself together again”, said Mt. SAC Athlete Director Joe Jennum. He is scheduled to officiate at another game Saturday.
A college football player in the U.S. is facing a five year ban, after he was arrested for punching a referee during a game. The district attorney’s office will decide whether to file criminal charges. “When he fell down, I thought somebody else hit him”, Schirmer said. The player told the paper’s reporter that he is “truly sorry”.

“Mr. Shirmer expressed deep remorse about the incident and any harm to the referee”. “He has no clue that the official was down”. The school intends to appeal the suspension.

According to the police report, the official was “punched in the head” and was “knocked unconscious”. Because the event became a police matter, video review was used in the process for something other than football.
