Campus Dean of Students Joseph Greenwell said that Leslie’s parents hoped other Berkeley students would follow his example by working for positive change in the world.

Leslie’s family, school friends, French authorities and US diplomatic officials had been searching for him frantically in the days since a truck was driven through a large crowd of Bastille Day revelers, killing 84 people and injuring more than 200.

The Berkeley students were studying at a programme affiliated with the global European Innovation Academy in Nice, the university said.

Earlier in July, UC Berkeley sophomore Tarishi Jain was among 20 hostages killed by Islamic militants in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

A vigil for Leslie is planned for 4:30 p.m. Monday on Sproul Plaza.

Folk said in a telephone interview that he still wants Clinton to go on trial, but he doesn’t want her executed.

“This is tragic, devastating news”, UC Berkeley chancellor Nicholas B. Dirks said in a statement.

A friend of the missing man, John Josi, posted on Facebook that Leslie was not injured in the violence but added, “we have not heard from him since then”.

UC Berkeley officials said that 84 of the 85 students participating in the program have been identified.

In an effort to locate Leslie, the study overseas program’s staff had joined with the campus’s risk services office and student affairs – along with Leslie’s fellow students, area officials and US consular personnel – to conduct an extensive search.

Two other Berkeley students sustained broken legs in the attack, according to the university.

A message left Sunday seeking more details from the Federal Bureau of Investigation wasn’t immediately returned.

Three other UC Berkeley students were injured in the attack, all suffering broken bones, according to the school statement.

Despite the lack of word to this point, family members are remaining hopeful that they will find Nicolas once they arrive in France. A third, 21-year-old Daryus Medora, whose leg was broken, remains in hospital.
