Jacobsen said the attack was a rare occurrence and advises beachgoers to take precaution, use good judgment and not venture too far out into the ocean. They were evaluating Tuesday to see if parts of the Newport Beach coastline should be opened again, The Los Angeles Times reported.

Corona del Mar State Beach was reopened at 7:30 a.m, .

“Current beach conditions include high surf with the presence of rip currents, sets are a consistent three to four feet with some sets of up to eight feet”, says Mary Locey, the City of Newport Beach’s public information officer.

The waters were closed in response to what appears to have been a shark attack on Sunday afternoon.

Corona Del Mar State Beach – where the attack happened – will reopen Wednesday morning after a final helicopter and boat survey of the waters, Lifeguard Battalion Chief Brent Jacobsen told ABC News Tuesday.

She ended up with large bite marks.

Korcsmaros was training for a half-triathlon this past weekend in the water off the Southern California city of Newport Beach when she “felt something hit her”, Rotter said. Lifeguards in a boat who saw her struggling about 100 yards offshore found her gushing blood, doctors and fire officials said.

The woman, swimming in a wetsuit, was spotted in distress by a lifeguard rescue boat at Corona Del Mar State Beach just after 4pm on Sunday, city of Newport Beach spokeswoman Tara Finnigan had said. They say the wounds came from a single large shark bite.

The 52-year-old Korcsmaros also suffered fractured ribs, lung lesions and damage to the muscles and skin of her upper arm and abdomen.

Officials also credited the quick action of lifeguards and emergency workers with saving Korcsmaros’ life.

“She was able to tread the water and hold her own until help arrived”, Rotter said. “So that’s pretty remarkable”.

“She’s a very strong lady. She’s remarkably calm”, Sauri said.

Key said a lifeguard tower called in the incident, and the boy was rushed to the hospital to be treated for an eight-inch bite behind his right knee and top of his calf. The woman, who was bit on her arm and torso, is expected to survive.

She will likely remain in the hospital for another week, says Dr. Humberto Sauri, one of the physicians treating her.
