Monday may bring a slight increase in wind gusty, but it will also bring the chance of a few showers to Ventura County.
Fire officials had earlier reported that parts of the Pacific Coast highway also were closed, but Ms Sumagaysay said she was not aware of that. No injuries or damaged homes had been reported by the time officials held a mid morning press conference.
About 600 area firefighters are battling the blaze and are being assisted by at least two water-dropping helicopters. But all mandatory evacuations are expected to be lifted at 5 p.m. Saturday.
Ms Sumagaysay said reopening the highway is a top priority, which officials said they hoped to accomplish by Saturday afternoon. It was reopened Saturday afternoon. Evacuees of the 35 homes that were threatened were told to leave using northern routes. “We had motorists making U-turns going opposing directions on the freeway with other motorists not realizing the situation, so we had an extreme traffic hazard”.
So far, the blaze has burned through some 1,200 acres (485 hectares) and is only 10 percent contained, according to Cal Fire public information officer Daniel Berlant.
