Playing in his fifth season, Newton led all quarterbacks in the regular season with 45 touchdowns, including 10 rushing scores, in leading the Panthers to a league-best 15-1 record. Newton was oh-so-close to being a unanimous victor – he had 48 of the 50 votes, with Tom Brady and Carson Palmer getting one apiece.
According to Pro-Football-Reference.com, Newton led all quarterbacks in touchdown percentage (7.1), which calculates the percentage of touchdowns thrown when attempting a pass. Considering the 26-year-old was working with a receiving corps comprised of Greg Olsen, Corey Brown, Ted Ginn Jr., Jerricho Cotchery and rookie Devin Funchess, that’s remarkable. He will also have won the top player honors and league championship trophies in the same season in both cases. The Panthers’ star became the first quarterback to have 35 passing touchdowns and 10 rushing touchdowns in the same season. He also ranked sixth in passer rating (99.4) while throwing for 3,837 yards.
Houston Texans defensive end J.J.
“This is nice, but that’s not why I do it – for awards – but to help people”, Boldin said.
“I was a two-star recruit coming out of high school”.
In another landslide vote, Kansas City Chiefs safety Eric Berry won after beating cancer over the offseason. We’ve been blown away at the cost of Newton’s other snazzy outfits, so this one likely costs a pretty penny.
Gurley missed all of training camp and the first two league games recovering from a torn ACL he incurred at Georgia in the 2014 season. The Broncos ranked first overall and against the pass, third versus the run. Steve McNair shared the award with Manning in 2003.
