Sadly, the Camaro has still not been confirmed but in March this year, at the New York Motor show, General Motors announced it was studying the Camaro’s Australian prospects in the wake of Ford’s decision to offer the Mustang in right-hand drive (RHD) markets.
Chevy’s “most powerful Camaro ever” will start at $62,135 for the coupe and $69,135 with the drop-top, meaning this track-focused beast will undercut the straight line-focused Hellcat by about two grand.
The 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, boasting 650 horsepower, will go 0-to-60 miles per hour in 3.5 seconds, while its quarter-mile time is a blistering 11.4 seconds at 127 miles per hour. Conversely, 60 to 0 is achieved in 107 feet.
Said to weigh 100kg lighter than a regular Camaro, the ZL1 also gains plenty of under the skin weight-saving that includes a pair of Recaro bucket seats.
The US car-maker also says it will reach a quarter mile (402-metres) in just 11.2 seconds at 204km/h. A 1LE performance package is available as a $4,500 option on the Camaro V-6 LT coupe and $6,500 on the V-8 1SS coupe.
In comparison, the base 2017 Camaro coupe starts at $27,300, including destination fees, according to the Chevrolet vehicle configurator. When fitted to the LT model, it results in a 0-100 km/h time of 5.2 seconds while on the SS, the 0-100 km/h time is an impressive 4.2 seconds as is the lateral g-force it can handle – 1.02g. The 1LE package gives the SS V-8s the ZL1’s electronic limited-slip differential, FE4 suspension with Magnetic Ride dampers and upgraded Brembo brakes.
