Cameron sets out his case for bombing Islamic State in Syria

“The reaction to his statement could determine whether that vote is ever held”.

Security chiefs have found that Britain is among the “top tier” of countries that Isis is targeting, David Cameron has told MPs as he warned the United Kingdom will “never be safe” until the Islamic terrorists are defeated.

“It is right that Parliament, on behalf of the people, asks hard questions and holds the Government to account”. “He must address the efficacy of military intervention and how it will contribute to a wider initiative to end civil war and secure reconstruction”.

They emphasised their opposition to any “external attempts” to bring regime change in Syria, a Kremlin official said.

“I say we can’t”.

Britain has always been carrying out airstrikes against the terror group in Iraq, but not in Syria.

The U.K. military has been participating in airstrikes against Islamic State in Iraq since September as part of an global coalition supporting the Iraqi government. Cameron on Monday only said that the vote could come “in the coming days and weeks”.

The two leaders were meeting as Hollande presses for a stronger worldwide coalition against the Islamic State, also known as ISIS or ISIL, which claimed responsibility for the attacks on November 13. The acquisition of 42 stealth fighter jets will also be accelerated.

Mr Cameron said in the Commons yesterday: “I am not for one minute arguing that action from the air alone can solve the very serious problem we have with Isil”.

But, breaking with a British political tradition of using a “party whip” to keep party discipline, his finance spokesman said Labour was considering allowing its lawmakers to vote as they wish, which may increase support for Cameron.

Scotland welcomed more than 100 people from camps surrounding the war-torn Middle East country from a chartered flight to Glasgow Airport last week.

The prime minister is urging MPs to back military action as he sets out a “comprehensive strategy” to tackle IS.

A House of Commons vote on extending the RAF’s mission from Iraq into neighbouring Syria was widely expected to take place by the end of the year.

This could expose a deep rift, as while the leader has indicated he opposes military action against IS, a number of shadow ministers are likely to support it or choose to abstain.

“It is in Syria, in Raqqa, that ISIL has its headquarters, and it is from Raqqa that some of the main threats against this country are planned and orchestrated”. Hollande said France plans to intensify its air strikes on ISIL targets in Syria and the aircraft carrier, Charles de Gaulle, is moving into position.

In 2013, Mr Cameron went to the Commons with a proposal to intervene in Syria, and was defeated, although the aim then was to oust president Assad.
