Cameroon Vigilantes fight Boko Haram with bare hands

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, but authorities are said to suspect Boko Haram, a group estimated to be responsible for as many as 20,000 deaths and the displacement of 2.5 million Africans from their homes since 2009.

The Lake Chad region, which straddles the borders of Chad, Cameroon, Niger and Nigeria, has been regularly targeted by the fighters.

Reports reaching us indicate that three Nigerian soldiers have lost their lives in a bloody battle against Boko Haram members in the notorious Sambisa forest.

However, security sources say that logistical constraints have caused delays and there are growing signs that national armies are instead acting alone.

Ryan Cummings, chief analyst for Africa at crisis management company red24, said such a strategy would have limited effects.

The deadliest attack on Chad’s aspect of the lake passed off on October 10, one other triple suicide, which killed forty one individuals at Baga Sola, based on I’Djamena.

Another suicide bombing killed three people in Chad on November 9.

The Lake Chad Region in Africa is unfortunately no stranger to extremist attacks. The U.S. Embassy warned today about possible attacks to hotels frequently visited by westerners.

Just last week, troops had begun operations around Lake Chad to take down militants, Cameroon’s government reportedly said.

“Three suicide bombers blew themselves up in three totally different locations on the weekly market on Loulou Fou, an island in Lake Chad”, the supply advised AFP, talking on situation of anonymity. They have recently used waves of terrorist attacks, often using woman and children to carry out the attacks.
