The Frenchman takes his team to Southampton on Boxing Day knowing they could end the night top of the Barclays Premier League.
“We have been top [at points in recent years] and I think football is pragmatic and nobody can predict what will happen in the next 21 games, so you want to go with the same attitude and spirit and earn the right to win games. It’s hard when you don’t play for eight or nine days to try and get up for it, and I think the guys are going to be knackered”.
But Wenger’s side then embarked on an excellent run of form, losing just three times in all competitions for the remainder of last season – and that has spilled into the current campaign as well. It was not just the importance of the result, coming against their most direct title rivals, but the way every player excelled in a hard-fought match, with brilliant performances all over the pitch. We go step-by-step. That’s never an easy game.
Arsenal have won five of their past six games in all competitions but the win over City was the most impressive.
“I had a good chat with him before the England-France game”. “Who will win? No-one knows”.
The Spaniard has been missing since with a calf injury since limping out of the 2-1 defeat at West Brom having scored an own goal at The Hawthorns.
“Look it’s too early to say that we will the league but it strengthens our belief that we can and it’s down to, you realise that when you come out you have to win these games and for us it’s important for us to realize that”, said Arsene Wenger, Arsenal Manager.
“The first shot Arsenal had at our goal was on 33 minutes. We’ve played 17 games – we’re not even at half way”. “I am very happy with the character and the personality of the team, they never gave up”, he insisted.
And Campbell was delighted with what he described as the home team’s “intelligent” performance.
