Camp Livingston is located in in the wooded hills of southeastern in, about 2.5 hours from the girl’s suburban Columbus hometown of Bexley, Ohio. She was pronounced dead at the scene by the Switzerland County Coroner’s Office, Hughes said.
“On behalf of Camp Livingston, we share with the heaviest of hearts that an 11 year-old female camper was seriously injured around 3 a.m. when a healthy tree was struck by lightning and fell on a cabin at camp during a severe storm”, Sandlin said.
Just before 8:30 a.m., a large tree branch fell onto their tent while the family was still inside.
“Emergency services arrived shortly after the accident, but she did not survive her injuries”, the camp wrote in an announcement on its Facebook page.
Camp officials say the girl died a short time later from her injuries.
According to camp officials, medics arrived shortly afterward but were unable to save the girl.
Camp Livingston is a summer retreat for Jewish children.
The camp did not identify the girl, out of respect for her family.

It’s not yet known how many campers were inside the cabin, but three adults were with them. Every child in camp will be calling home today beginning around 10 a.m. – we appreciate your help, patience and understanding as we assist the children through this tragedy.
