Campers flee Wood Lake fire north of Harrison Hot Springs

The sites weren’t immediately threatened by the fire and there was no official evacuation order issued, Mr. Skrepnek said, but the area was cleared to make it easier for fire crews to do their work.

Coastal Fire Centre Information Officer Donna McPherson says the 4.5 hectare fire, 20 kilometres northwest of Harrison Hot Springs, is believed to be human caused.

The fire started on Sunday afternoon and quickly grew, producing heavy smoke throughout the popular recreational area.

According to the BC Wildfire Service, many areas of Southern B.C. are reporting smoky skies as a result of the current wildfires burning in the province.

The rapidly growing fire went from 100 to 600 hectares between Monday and Tuesday due to strong winds.

A fire and a subsequent explosion at a former air-raid shelter in the northern German city of Hamburg where plant oils were being stored left 43 people injured on Tuesday, authorities said.

“I would call it frustrating, because we’ve been trying really hard to get people’s minds around the idea that they’ve got to be careful when they’re in the forest”, she said.

“We know it’s human-caused because it wasn’t lightning”.

“It’s particularly disappointing to see human-caused fires, especially when we are seeing a season as busy as what we’ve had so far in 2015”.

Macpherson adds more resources are coming into the area today.
