Can Mahrez boost lift the Foxes past Arsenal?

One player Wenger failed to lure to the Emirates Stadium was Leicester forward Jamie Vardy, who rejected the overtures to sign a fresh deal with the champions. Arsenal fans want Wenger to sign Alexandre Lacazette but how can he be worth anything like the £60 million Lyon are apparently asking? But, low on confidence and possibly missing Aaron Ramsey and Mesut Ozil, I don’t think they have enough to win this one.

“I don’t want to speak about individual players”, Wenger replied when asked about a potential summer move for Mahrez.

“I do believe that Wenger will make a signing in that area before the window closes”.

Both the Gunners and the Foxes were aiming to bounce back from Premier League opening-weekend losses, to Liverpool and Hull City respectively, but could not find a breakthrough in a tight game.

Switzerland global Granit Xhaka is Wenger’s marquee signing this summer after the midfielder completed a £33m move to Arsenal from Bundesliga outfit Borussia Monchengladbach.

Wenger is also continuing to scour the market for centre-backs with Valencia’s Shkodran Mustafi his first-choice – amid interest in Jose Fonte and Jose Gimenez among others – but Arsenal are reluctant to meet the player’s £30m valuation.

“They (Leicester) have the same qualities as past year, quick on the break, defend well as a unit.

I will have to take a gamble maybe, but I will still have 48 hours to decide that”, he said. So while his return is a good news, it does not solve the Gunners’ inherent problem in front of the goal. We have many examples in England of teams that spend a huge amount of money looking for central defenders.

Wenger defended his record of being selective in the transfer market, saying the club’s success has been built on making the right buys rather than the most buys.

Over the years, people move around, be it the Saxons (Germans), Normans (French), Romans before them and Greeks from the years of Alexander the Great; and more recently, people moved to the U.S.A, Canada, Australia and the like. “It’s been a pleasure to be here so I’m going to keep going”, he told the club’s official TV channel.
