Canada approves abortion pill known as RU

Canadian doctors who were wary of the makeshift cocktail will likely be more willing to prescribe an abortion drug that’s approved by Health Canada for that goal, said Jennifer Blake, the CEO of the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada.

The Globe and Mail said on Thursday that RU-486, which will be sold under the brand name “Mifegymiso”, could be available in Canada as early as next winter. A doctor will administer the dosage of mifepristone to block the progesterone needed for pregnancy, then two days later will administer another dosage of misoprostol to induce contractions in order to expel the fetus.

“Any of those details you would have to speak to the officials at Health Canada and the scientists that actually manage the regulatory approval process”.

“I think its another dark day for Canada with the approval of that risky human pesticide”, commented Campaign Life Coalition (CLC) President Jim Hughes.

One reason for pessimism among local pro-choice advocates is that drug-induced abortion is already available on the island, but it’s almost impossible to explain where.

Mifepristone, or RU 486, was approved in the United States back in 2000.

China: In 1988, along with France, China became one of the first countries to approve the drug, which it attempted to purchase from Roussel-UCLAF. Both mifepristone and misoprostol are included in the World Health Organization’s Model List of Essential Medicines.

MacKay says questions should be directed to Health Minister Rona Ambrose and her department, adding that personal opinions are best kept personal. “Afterwards it prompts the uterus to contract and release the tissues related to the pregnancy, so essentially its like having a miscarriage”.

The British manufacturer of the drug, Linepharma global Limited, said the woman opting for abortion will have to take the first pill at the physician’s clinic.

It allows women to terminate unwanted pregnancies without undergoing surgery. Previously unavailable here, Mifepristone has just received approval from Health Canada.

In fact, women in roughly 60 countries are able to access the drug, which is used to safely terminate a pregnancy.

The drug is apparently effective in 95 per cent of cases.
