Negotiations were extended twice after CUPW served a 72-hour action noticed last Thursday.

The two sides had been negotiating around the clock since Friday, working a special mediator.

Some of the main issues in the dispute included pension structure, job security, and rural-urban pay differences.

“We cant give details of the agreements at this time, but were pleased that our members dont have to resort to taking job action, ” said Mike Palecek, national president of CUPW. The agreements mean that any such demand has been put off for at least two years.

Also Tuesday, the country’s biggest direct marketing firm, Direct Response Media Group, called on Ottawa to force a binding agreement between Canada Post and its employees to end the uncertainty over mail and parcel deliveries.

Canada Post said in an August 26 statement that its pension solvency deficit jumped to an estimated $8.1 billion as of July 1.

The threat of disruption to services has been hanging over Canadian’s for several weeks. “Canadians can now use the postal system with confidence”.

The union, which had wanted one agreement for both its bargaining units, said in a statement that key bargaining points – like the protection of its defined contribution benefit plan for current and future members – had been secured.
