Canada’s Derek Drouin leaps to gold in men’s high jump

Great Britain’s 2012 bronze medallist Robbie Grabarz finished just outside the medals in the Olympic high jump as Canada’s Derek Drouin won gold.

He had the gold medal locked up after the next highest-jumping competitors missed their jumps, but took a single run at 2.40 metres in an attempt to break the Olympic record of 2.39.

Drouin won with a 2.38-metre jump, a first-place performance that gave him his second Olympic medal.

Qatar’s Mutaz Essa Barshim won silver with a best jump of 2.36 meters, .

Drouin was a bronze medallist at London 2012 after missing three times at 2.33. Great Britain’s Robert Grabarz and Ukraine’s Andriy Protsenko also cleared 2.33 meters, but missed jumps at the next height of 2.36 meters resulted in their not getting onto the medal stand.

Elsewhere on the track, star sprinter Andre De Grasse cruised into the semifinals of the men’s 200 metres in his quest for a second Olympic medal.

Derek Drouin was short of the mark at 2.40m having already cinched the gold.

Bran Starc finished in 15th..

“Drouin made six straight attempts, the final jump of that streak was 2.38 meters (7’9 3/4”).
