The victory sets up a showdown with unbeaten Finland in Sunday’s gold-medal game.

The third period was a nerve breaking stretch seeing both teams looking to score on power plays, but it was Canada’s shot puck to glide peacefully into the net of the goalless net with two seconds alarm before the final siren.

Mozyakin added a powerplay goal at 13:41 to give Russian Federation a comfortable 2-0 lead at the end of the first period. And goals from David Warsofsky and Tyler Motte put the US ahead 3-2 with time winding down in the second period.

The U.S. will play for a second bronze medal in a row against Russian Federation. I’ve not often seen Canada play like that. The backup goaltender, he finished the tournament with a record of 2-0, a goals against average of 0.50 and a save percentage of.971.

Pavel Datsyuk played almost 21 minutes and Alexey Marchenko almost a dozen in Russia’s 3-1 loss to Finland in the day’s first semifinal.

It’s Canada’s 26th World Championship gold and second in a row.

“They played well against us last game”, Ellis said.

“We’ve executed our game plan nearly perfectly today and that made the difference”, Perry said.

After Canada regained the lead, goaltender Cam Talbot withstood the American pressure the rest of the way.

“There’s one more chance for us to beat Finland”, Canada forward Ryan O’Reilly said.

“We’ve learned a lot from our first game against them at the championship”.

Stone, who had been tied for the team scoring lead entering the game, went to the locker-room favouring his left arm. Finland then shut down the game in the third to secure the win.

But while the USA team’s youth was unsafe, Canada’s depth proved too much in the third period. Led by 18-year-old Matthews and a group of college kids and players still getting their feet wet in the National Hockey League, the US had been getting better and better with each passing day.
