Canada to seek UN Security Council seat for 2021-22

The next event was a boardroom meeting with Ban Ki-moon where the UN Secretary General joked about the larger-than-normal gang of photographers: “I don’t know why you are so popular”.

The campaign for the council seat is no shoo-in.

Canada’s previous government had withdrawn from United Nations activity and was seen to have made a lacklustre run for a seat on the Security Council in 2010.

Additionally, membership on the council fits in with the longstanding tradition of having Canada at the table, Robertson noted, and that’s not as small a consideration as some might think. He said that may explain why Trudeau picked a long time frame, which stretches past his government’s present mandate and beyond the already crowded races.

“We are determined to help the United Nations make greater strides in support of its goals for all humanity”, said Trudeau.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he has no problem calling himself a feminist but that every time he mentions it, the “Twitterverse explodes”.

Trudeau said the new residents will make Canada stronger.

“We had lost a lot of traction over the last 10 years in not being involved politically, not being involved in peacekeeping, reducing our foreign aid development”.

To increase their role in the world, analysts say, Canada has to be clear about its agenda. Its core principle held that the safety of civilians in armed conflict was paramount. – The General Assembly elects 10 non-permanent members for a two-year term. The R2P, as it is called, set out criteria for when the world could intervene in the affairs of a country to protect its citizens.

The 15-member Security Council contains five permanent members with veto power – the United States, Britain, France, Russia, and China – also known as the P5.

“This year there’s a closely fought election between three European members” he said, referring to the contest between Italy, Sweden and the Netherlands.

“Any world leaders who tell me “I’d love to, I just can’t do that with the current configuration of our parliament or of my party”, I say “Well, what are you doing to change that configuration and draw out those extraordinary women who can be leaders that we need”?” he said.

Trudeau has said he wants Canada to return to peacekeeping, but has not provided details.

“It’s going to take some new equipment, it’s going to take an global development strategy”, said Axworthy.
