The French and Australian governments have also urged their citizens to remain vigilant.
The warnings made mention of the upscale Beijing neighborhood of Sanlitun but were otherwise nonspecific. “U.S. citizens are urged to exercise heightened vigilance”. “The US Embassy has issued the same guidance to US government personnel”, the embassy said.
Security was tightened around the area, which is popular among foreigners and home to shops, bars and some embassies, on Thursday.
Chinese police on Thursday stepped up security in Beijing amid rare warnings of possible threats against Westerners issued by the USA and some other embassies. No details on the threat were released by Chinese authorities either.

The U.K. government has warned citizens of the violence in a travel advisory posted to its website.
In August, a woman was stabbed to death in broad daylight by a sword-wielding man there.
The Beijing cops officers additionally issued a yellow alert calling on people to concentrate on safety & public order in shopping districts & different public areas throughout the holiday season.
