York police say the boy’s mother then took the phone and told police that she had only one drink and that she was fine to drive. We will respond to these calls promptly as they are considered to be crimes in progress.

After the incident the police called the boy “brave” on Twitter.

The exchange was outlined in a statement released by York Regional Police. When the dispatcher phoned back, the boy answered and said he was in a van with his mother, who was drinking and driving.

The boy managed to provide his name, age, address and a description of the van before his mother noticed the conversation.

Police were then able to track the van from Dufferin St. and 17th Sideroad in King Township, where the call originated, to the area of Columbus Way and Mulock Dr.in Newmarket.

Police quickly located and stopped the vehicle in the town of Newmarket, north of Toronto, arrested and charged the mother with impaired driving after a test showed her blood alcohol level was twice the legal limit, and turned the boy over to his father. As well, the Children’s Aid Society was notified. She was subsequently charged with impaired driving and for blowing over.08.

So far this year, York Regional Police have laid more than 1,500 charges in relation to impaired driving due to alcohol or drug, which is up from the 1,384 charges laid during the same time period in 2014.
