Canadian Woman Arrested While Trying To Smuggle Cocaine In A Fake Pregnancy Belly

Drug mules aren’t something new and over the years people have come up with the most ingenious ways to smuggle drugs. The methods adopted for smuggling drugs have ranged from hiding them in the rectum to concealing them in the sole of a shoe. Recently, authorities in Columbia arrested a woman who had concealed nearly 2 kg of cocaine in a fake pregnant belly. The authorities became suspicious, when this woman who was about to board a Canadian flight was unable to give a proper answer as to how many months pregnant she was. Also, her belly seemed cold and hard.

Upon investigating further the authorities learnt that the pregnant belly was actually made of latex and subsequently stumbled upon the cocaine hidden underneath it. Ritchie the 28-year old woman who was caught red-handed could end up languishing in a Columbian prison if convicted. This woman wouldn’t be the first to be arrested in 2013 for trying to smuggle drugs outside Columbia, in fact it would astound you to know there are 44 others who have been caught trying to do the same and this in 2013 alone. There are nearly 847 foreigners just like Ritchie who are imprisoned in Columbia and all for trying to smuggle drugs.

Just in case you are wondering, the cocaine found in the fake belly is estimated to have a street value of around $60,000. It seems the drug cartels need to rehearse better or hire smarter people if they want to really succeed. Also, one might be curious to know as to how many attempts are actually made each year to smuggle drugs out of Columbia. It seems possible fully that many more such women might have tired this trick and succeeded where this Canadian woman failed. All she probably needed to do was sound a bit more confident and she would have gotten away with it.

For those unaware, drug trafficking is rampant in Columbia. Drugs like coca and marijuana have become a part of the Columbian lifestyle. Names of drug lords like Pablo Escobar and Carlos Lehder (both of whom are from Columbia) are known to people around the world. At one point in time both these guys gave U.S authorities sleepless nights thanks to the huge quantities of drugs they managed to illegally smuggle into the country.
