Canadians urged to take precautions after Zika virus discovery found in Miami

Hawkinson said South Florida providers should prepare for an uptick in patients visiting urgent care clinics, hospital emergency departments and physician offices following Monday’s news that as many as 14 people in the Miami-Dade County area had contracted Zika through mosquitoes.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has even warned pregnant women not to travel to the Miami neighborhood where local cases have been detected.

Health officials in Canada are joining their American counterparts in issuing warnings to pregnant women travelling to the Miami, Florida area.

Health officials in Florida reported 10 more Zika virus cases, increasing the number of infected people in the sunshine state to 14.

The aerial spraying campaign was recommended to reduce adult mosquito populations that might be capable of carrying the Zika virus.

Prices for non-tropical destinations like San Diego or Alaska could also increase dramatically, experts say.

“This is sometimes referred to as a Cockroach of mosquitos, it can survive anywhere, it can breed in a capful of water, it’s an indoor mosquito”, said Sylvia Matthews Burwell, Health and Human Services Secretary.

In an alert issued Monday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention urged expectant mothers who frequent the Wynwood area to get tested for Zika. For men who has visited transmission zones, the wait time is extended to six months.

“There are actually two mosquitoes that can transmit Zika, one of them is endemic (regularly found) to our area, the other one is not”, Rodriguez said.

“I know there’s a concern in Miami, but Miami seems to be pretty far away”, said Don Eggis, from Indiana. I might wear bug spray going forward. And the Food and Drug Administration has not given approval to that approach in the U.S. “In Miami, aggressive mosquito control measures don’t seem to be working as well as we would have liked”.

Only one in five people show symptoms, making Zika a particularly hard virus to track.

Zika infections in pregnant women can cause severe brain-related birth defects, including extremely small skulls.

The funding will also help the state monitor developmental outcomes in Zika-affected children.
