Canadiens dominate Winter Classic
That type of all-around effort has helped make the Canadiens one of the NHL’s most successful teams in recent years, and that trend should continue if their Winter Classic showing translates to the remainder of the season. However, the new year didn’t start off the way the Bruins had wanted.

While Friday’s triumph may not technically carry any extra weight in comparison to other regular-season games, a road win over a rival in the NHL’s signature game could give Montreal the confidence it needs to regain a stranglehold on the Eastern Conference for the remainder of the campaign. They also passed the Florida Panthers for top spot in the division. “It was some of the best ice I’ve ever played on”.
Canadiens coach Michel Therrien tried every line combination you could think of in Brendan Gallagher’s 17-game absence from the lineup.
With the home of the NFL’s New England Patriots transformed for the festive New Year’s Day outdoor game, the Canadiens showed they’re right at home anywhere in the Boston area.
Boston was outshot 14-3 in the first period.
The problem for the Bruins was that it seemed like they were always one step behind the Canadiens. The Bruins had a chance to get a huge boost.
Big save for Tuukka followed by a big clear. It couldn’t have been easy for him recently when the team acquired goaltender Ben Scrivens in a trade, but Condon has played well the last few games. However, a goalie can’t win a game on his own. Tomas Plekanec got the second assist on the play. In the second power play in particular, the Bruins had a lot of zone time and managed some good shots on goal. The Canadiens scored early, the goal coming after a faceoff and then an ensuing scramble, Desharnais scoring his first goal and third point in 18 games. After starting 3-3-1 with a 3.29 goals-against average and. Four of the five goals allowed by Rask were the result of some impressive hand-eye coordination on the part of the Canadiens, and he was often left to fend for himself.
The play happened during a scrum after the game had ended. The Bruins survived the disadvantage despite some pressure. “Especially on a big stage, all things considered”. First one went to Lars Eller for Hooking Brett Connolly. David Desharnais got the Habs on the board just over a minute into the game, and the Canadiens never looked back. The best versions have relied on an interesting venue to grab attention: historic ballparks like Wrigley Field and Fenway Park, or a ginormous football venue like Michigan Stadium. They’re a team that didn’t sit on one this time around.
Some critics of the NHL Winter Classic have called it a “cash grab” by the league and the teams involved. They won the game in 2003 and were shut out in 2011 by the Calgary Flames.
The Winter Classic has become a heated affair already, as both of these Original Six Teams have a long and unfriendly history. Clearly these two teams do not like each other.
