It is believed Mr O’Brien was murdered elsewhere.
Mr O’Brien was identified at 3.30pm yesterday after a DNA sample taken from the torso matched a sample provided by a member of his family.
But they think he may have fallen foul of someone with a grudge to bear, since he returned home last month after a spell working in Australia.
“He explained to his family that he was going to carry out some work down the country”, said Supt Wall.
Detectives believe the suitcase containing the torso was thrown into the water late on Friday night or in the early hours of Saturday but are still unsure of the exact timeline.
“It is a particularly gruesome crime and the brutality of it can not be overstated in respect of how a human being has been treated”, he said.
Residents on Lealand Road in Clondalkin last night spoke of their shock.
Gardai have identified the man at the centre of the brutal suitcase murder.
Gardaí have so far gathered more than 80 witness statements from members of the public, with investigating officers appealing for anyone with information to contact Leixlip Garda Station.
The torso in the suitcase was wrapped in plastic and discovered by two walkers along the banks of the canal at Ardclough on Saturday afternoon.
He added: “If you have spoken to him by email, phone or text, we would like to hear from you. They are devastated and grief-stricken”.

However they say they still need to speak to anyone who may have been on the towpath between Thursday and Saturday or who may have observed, seen or had any contact with Mr O’Brien since the early hours of Friday morning.
