Canelo Alvarez calls out Golovkin: ‘I don’t fear anyone’

Unless Floyd Mayweather unexpectedly remains retired, the richest fight in boxing would be between Alvarez, who in the American’s absence has succeeded him as Las Vegas’ biggest draw, and WBA and IBF champion Gennady Golovkin, incidentally present at the T-Mobile Arena.

Then, as quickly as you could snap your fingers, Alvarez plowed a powerful overhand right hand flush into Khan’s notoriously susceptible jaw, and the British fighter crumpled to the canvas, his head bouncing off the canvas and then he was out cold.

“This challenge came and it was very hard to turn down”, Khan said. “But I knew time would come to my favour, and you saw that”.

Combine Canelo’s unparalleled punching power with Khan moving up two weight classes for this fight, and this felt like an inevitability, even with Khan using his speed to control the bout for the first handful of rounds.

Although Khan put forward a strong showing in the early exchanges and looked to be winning the bout on points, a thunderous right hand by Alvarez ended the contest and the Brit’s hopes of winning the WBC middleweight title. Khan is a very fast, very elusive, and very tricky fighter, but I am happy with the work I have done and I am ready to go in the ring and break him down.

Alvarez (47-1-1, 33 KO) was behind on many scorecards on social media and what not, either three rounds to two (48-47) or four rounds to one (49-46), including 49-46 on my card, and the same on Wil Esco’s card.

Khan’s trainer, Virgil Hunter, joined in the chorus of those who want to see Alvarez and Golovkin fight soon.

Afterward, Alvarez said he would accept Golovkin’s challenge and fight him. “I was getting in the ring with a big guy”.

Khan, who weighed in at 155 on Friday, seemed to maintain his speed and boxing ability, despite fighting at a higher weight. “But I knew they would come to my favor as the fight went on”. I’m telling you one thing, he can beat anyone at 147 [lbs] or 154.

Amir has said that he has no regrets after being knocked out by Saul Alvarez.
