Canelo Alvarez Drops Liam Smith In Ninth Round

The offer was a big one according to Canelo and that included twice as much as GGG has ever made in the ring.

But against all odds, Canelo vs. Smith was not the boring, one-sided fight many expected. We are ready for him and he doesn’t want to accept. He fought and beat a legit junior middleweight champion and took his WBO belt on Saturday night at the Dallas Cowboys stadium in front of a loud packed house of 50,000 fans in attendance. Give me the respect I deserve.

Golovkin is a 34-year-old based in Santa Monica, California and the Kazakhstan native has said he wants the fight as soon as possible.

“Canelo isn’t a full light-middleweight like I am”, Smith said, via the Mirror, “and that’s to my advantage”.

“I’ve taken this fight because it’s an opportunity to make a name for myself and establish myself as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world”.

“We’re a team. I’m not going to blame my promoter or anyone else”.

“I’m not in a situation where I have nothing to lose in this fight”, Smith, 28, said during a recent conference call.

“Styles make fights and there are great styles between us. I am very disappointed”.

With Gennady Golovkin defeating Kell Brook last week, the boxing world now waits for Canelo to win and fight the Kazakh star for middleweight supremacy, seemingly giving little thought to the possibility that Smith could win, despite his 23-0 record and eight fight knockout streak.

Smith started the fight early in a defensive posture, and that allowed Alvarez to likely put numerous early rounds of the fight in the bank. “The styles are very different but the styles mix well to provide a attractive fight, a great fight for the fans so I hope so”, Canelo told BoxNation. “I know Canelo-Golovkin is the biggest fight to make, the fighters know it’s the biggest fight to make and the fans know it’s the biggest fight to make”.

“I’m confident I can stand and trade with him”.

“He was too good and skillful, and I was too slow tonight”.

Alvarez is one of the best combination punchers in the sport and showed it off with a lovely double right uppercut, counter left body shot that forced Smith to a squatting position with his gloves touching – a necessary break to catch his breath.

The 26-year-old Mexican effortlessly dethroned Smith for the WBO junior welterweight championship by delivering a punishing blow to the body in the ninth round.
