Canelo vs. Smith results: Canelo blasts through Smith, gets grilled on GGG

Canelo Alvarez, left, and Liam Smith, right, face off with promoter Oscar De La Hoya, center, looking on after the official weigh-in for their upcoming title fight at the stadium in Arlington, Texas, Friday, Sept. 16, 2016. The experience and following Canelo has is going to put Smith in uncharted territory and he has acknowledged it’s going to be a hostile environment.

The two powerful punchers have been on a collision course since November, when Alvarez won his title from Miguel Cotto.

Canelo Alvarez and his Saturday opponent, Liam Smith, each weighed in at the junior-middleweight limit 154 pounds Friday.

Gennady Golovkin could be up next for Saul “Canelo” Alvarez after he beat Liam Smith on Saturday.

“I offered Golovkin double, triple the amount to make the fight happen and he still hasn’t answered”, Canelo said after the fight.

Liverpudlian Smith is unbeaten in 24 contests and won the WBO belt when he defeated U.S. fighter John Thompson in Manchester last October.

“We made an offer to Golovkin 30 days ago”, said Alvarez, whose only defeat was to Floyd Mayweather in 2014 via a points decision. I’m 26 years old and I’ve fought against the best. Signals have been mixed from the Alvarez camp whether he was waiting to better negotiating terms and location as well as wanting to spend more time training at a higher weight. If Alvarez wins this weekend, like he’s expected to do, it could lead to the showdown most fight fans want to see.

“I’ve taken this fight because it’s an opportunity to make a name for myself and establish myself as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world”. “I am the best at this sport and Viva La Mexico!” “That’s what we prepared for, to give Mexico a lovely victory [on Mexican Independence Day weekend]”.

The official attendance for tonight’s fight at AT&T Stadium was 51,240. “I’m going to win this fight”. Smith sustained a cut above his right eye and was floored in next two consecutive rounds, before an imposing left hook from Alvarez ultimately put an end to Smith’s valor. He was willing take some hits while trying to land his knockout right.
