Canes place Semin on waivers, plan to buy out his contract
The Canes on Tuesday placed the Russian winger on unconditional waivers with the objective of buying out his contract. Semin of the Hurricanes and Brad Boyes of the Florida Panthers were the latest players to be placed on waivers to buy out their deals.

As expected, Cody Hodgson cleared waivers Tuesday.
He signed a five-year, $35 million contract with the team after a strong 2012-13 performance with the Hurricanes that saw him record 44 points in 44 games during the lockout shortened season. The buyout will cost the Canes $2.33 million per season the next six years.
This move wasn’t much of a surprise, after he quickly fell out of favour with first-year coach Bill Peters.
“I do not know what’s happening with me this year”, said Semin.
A native of Krasnoyarsk, Russia, Semin skated in 166 games for the Hurricanes over three seasons, recording 41 goals and 64 assists (105 points) and a plus-5 rating.
However, he was forced to rethink that strategy following a season where Semin finished with a career-low six goals in 57 games and was sometimes a healthy scratch.
He went on to lead the team in goals that season with 21 to go with 15 assists.
But after that, Semin’s production tailed off.

Boyes, who entered last season tied for the most shootout goals in the NHL, struggled in the extra session, making just 2-of-7.
