Canon’s 80D Delivers Improved AF for Stills and Video
News Lens, Power Zoom Adapter, and Directional Stereo Microphone Enhance Video Quality In addition to the new Canon EOS 80D DSLR camera, Canon U.S.A.is also introducing the Canon EF-S18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens, a newly designed lens with a premium exterior design that will serve as the kit lens for the new Canon EOS 80D camera.

The new DSLR brings with it a 24.2MP sensor, a nice bump up from the 20.2MP EOS 70D. And with videographers also in mind, the 80D has features for this user, such as an improved Dual Pixel CMOS Autofocus system (technology introduced in its predecessor, the EOS 70D) and headphone and microphone jacks.
The camera has a new Dual Pixel CMOS autofocus system, which enables faster and smoother focusing while shooting videos.
The 45-point cross-type viewfinder AF system has wider focus area, whether shooting horizontally or vertically. To top this off, a new “Intelligent Viewfinder” provides 100% viewfinder coverage for easier and more accurate framing.
Canon’s all-new EOS 80D follows the recent addition of the of the hotly anticipated 1DX Mark to the professional EOS roster and is yet another sign the firm’s turning its attention squarely back to the enthusiast market. Coupling these features with seven-frames-per-second shooting should make the 80D a respectable performer for sports and other fast-action shooting. As we suspected, the leaked photos and specs indicated that the camera was due for a launch and sure enough Canon has obliged.
Canon has continued to improve its SLR video offering with the new 80D, which features an autofocus system among other features. This is the first from Canon to feature Nano USM, a new type of focusing motor which combines the benefits of an ultrasonic motor for high-speed AF when shooting stills, and a lead-screw type stepping motor for smooth and quiet movie AF.
Canon also announced two new video-focused accessories to go with its EOS 80D and super-zoom lens.
The underlying glass in the lens has also been refined as has the image stabilization system, which should provide up to 4-stops of shake reduction. The camera will be involved in available April onwards.
The lens is also the first to support a new Power Zoom Adapter, “the world’s first detachable zoom adapter that provides silent and smooth zoom”, and can be adjusted incrementally to 10 different levels of zoom speed, from 2.4 seconds to 14. Slotting neatly into the camera’s hot shoe, the DM-E1 can be angled between 90 to 120 degrees, while its “shock mount construction” reduces noise from the camera and lens.

The EOS 80D will be available to buy for £999 (body-only) and is expected to be released in May.
