Canon’s new M5 is its first seriously competitive mirrorless camera
Considered as the most enthusiastic-friendly camera of all the EOS M series. It borrows many features from the company’s prosumer-focused 80D, and is a more serious version of what has come before. Unlike its previous attempts at this segment, the camera’s specifications appear to be generally favorable, at least on paper.

The Japanese multinational firm’s new mirrorless optical instrument leverages the Dual Pixel AF tech that exists in some models of SLRs and includes an in-body EVF. Whether it is manipulating light or simply shooting in unusual conditions, with the ability to select ISO up to a massive 25,600 with no expansion needed, the EOS M5 is the camera to be carrying for unique, well composed photographs.
Also on-board with both cameras is the Dual Pixel CMOS autofocus, created to help users grab shots in video mode. There are quite a few other changes, including a new Bluetooth Smart-based wireless communications setup which looks to offer similar capabilities to Nikon’s SnapBridge, not to mention improved battery life. The former results in M5 having the fastest autofocus speed in the Canon mirrorless lineup.
Internally the camera has a 24MP APS-C image sensor powered by a Digic 7 image processor.
A notable feature of the camera includes the 49-focus points that can be useful in capturing sports events.
The EOS M5 can capture videos in 1080p resolution with 60 frames per second.
Full details on this latest mirrorless camera can be found on the Canon website. The Dual Pixel autofocus, for example, helps users to track subjects in motion correctly in video mode. This mirrorless camera has 24MP under its belt. Canon also instituted the “Touch and Drag AF” which allows you to easily switch the subject of focus by dragging the AF frame directly on the LCD panel without looking through the EVF.
Through the years, Canon has delivered top-notch cameras to its consumers.
We now have a new entry in the mirrorless space with the Canon M5 which could also be called a Canon 80D without the mirror. The new mirrorless camera promises to right the wrongs of its predecessors. It’s finished in black, with a matching leatherette and the company’s iconic logo raised atop the body, just below the pop-up flash.

There’s now also apparently better image stabilisation as the M5 makes use of a hybrid system and 5-axis compensation to keep things from getting wobbly and it’ll ship with an EF-M 15-45mm f3.5-6.3 IS STM in November More than that however, I’m genuinely surprised at how the body looks even more like a DSLR camera than ever before.
