“The seal won that battle but shortly after the same shark successfully consumed a different seal further offshore”, conservancy President Cynthia Wigren said in a statement provided to the Boston Globe.

Researchers said that videos like this one are important to their studies on great white sharks in the Atlantic Ocean.

Dr. Greg Skomal of the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries was out on a boat at the time, working with the Atlantic White Shark Conservatory when he saw the shark leap out of the water off Monomoy, Cape Cod. However, the crafty seal managed the avoid the shark’s jaws in mid-air.

Researchers from the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy and the state make twice-weekly trips to the waters off Chatham to document great whites. The seal swings its tail in midair and slaps the great white in the face. In addition to the video shot on Monday, Skomal also tagged another two great white sharks. “To watch this shark launching itself out of the water to grab a seal”.
