Civil War is holding strong at the box office for a second weekend in a row. The action/thriller took home $15 million over the weekend.

But “it should continue to play very, very well”, he adds.

Worldwide, Civil War is already at over $940 million, and will shortly pass Zootopia as the top grossing film around the globe in 2016.

“Money Monster”, starring George Clooney, Julia Roberts and Jack O’Connell and directed by Jodie Foster, was the highest-grossing new movie of the weekend.

In February, Deadpool – also from Fox, the studio (and “Marvel universe”) from which the X-Men movies come – did even better than expected, and gave several nods to the X-Men films throughout. BH Tilt’s low-budget horror-thriller The Darkness, starring Kevin Bacon and Radha Mitchell, scared up US$5.2 million at 1,754 sites in a Friday the 13th launch aimed at horror fans. The comedy-adventure declined a mere 27% from the previous frame and will wind up the weekend with more than $311 million domestically.

It is still Disney’s dominance this weekend too as The Jungle Book remained on the second spot earning an estimated $17.7 million, pushing the film’s cume over $310 million. The movie looks to be bringing in a respectable $14 million for its opening weekend, which is higher than its original $10 million estimate. “Mother’s Day”, $3.3 million 6. “The Lobster”, which was originally acquired by Alchemy, won the Jury Prize at last year’s Cannes Film Festival.

Also noteworthy among arthouse releases was the opening of the Jane Austen adaptation Love & Friendship, with Kate Beckinsale and Chloë Sevigny.

“Traditionally this second weekend in May is not an enviable weekend to be releasing on, but it can be a land of opportunity for films that fill a particular niche, or bring in an audience who might not be interested in these big blockbusters, ” Dergarabedian said.
