Captain America Civil War Dominates The Global Box Office
“Captain America” is also keeping the USA box office on track for a record performance in 2016 with $3.856 billion through this weekend – 7.8 percent ahead of the same point a year ago and an impressive 14.7 percent ahead of 2014. / “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice”, and images from Getty Images. Only one other movie has ever attained that milestone, and alas it is not Captain America: Civil War (I’ll give you a clue what it is: It rhymes with “Char Wors”). I mean, in the same way that Civil War, not everyone has the same amount of scenes or lines, I think you can assume with so many characters, we’ll have to be as rigorous.

Disney has now had the No. 1 movie in the United States and Canada in 11 of the last 21 weekends, and some box office analysts predict Civil War will remain the top draw for the next two weekends.
Overseas, “Civil War” has taken in $496.6 million. The latest Deadline summary puts the movie at a staggering total of $678.39 million worldwide – more than enough to keep Marvel happy, especially if it ends up holding strong over its second weekend. Captain America: Civil War writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely teased that there was some “pushback” about Ant-Man transforming into Giant-Man early on, and directors Anthony Russo and Joe Russo really had to fight for his inclusion. Hence, the sole non-“Avengers” film that crossed the total for Marvel is “Iron Man 3”.
Also of note, total USA box office performance is tracking for a record year, with the current $3.856 billion in box office gross almost 8% ahead of the record pace set in 2015. “Captain America” doused concerns that fans might be tiring of the superhero genre, which will be part of Disney’s and other studios’ slates for years to come. Keanu limped in at number five, with $3.1 million.
