‘Captain America: Civil War’ Sets Three New Box Office Records for Disney

As BGR sister site Variety noted on Sunday, Civil War helped a revitalized Disney crush the prior record for the fastest a movie studio surpassed $1 billion at the box office in a calendar year. While the exact United States opening weekend figure won’t be revealed until tomorrow, the current estimate stands at $181 million which is close to double the debut of the previous Captain America sequel. Come to think of it, there were a couple Avengers we thought were going to take the long dirt nap by the end of Captain America: Civil War, and they’re still standing.

“Civil War”, which began to be shown at the cinemas in the United States and Canada Friday, was projected to fetch 181.8 million USA dollars in tickets revenue over the weekend, according to comScore. In a first, all of its five movie units, including Marvel, Pixar and Lucasfilm, will have new releases in a single year.

You can access some of the new content right now, with the rest rolling out through the month of May. That was one of the higher forecasts.

Industry analysts projected the film’s opening to fall closer to $200 million. However, while critics were nearly-unanimous in trashing Dawn Of Justice, reviews for Civil War have been the opposite. Disney and Marvel already hold the opening record for a superhero genre: The $207.4 million brought in by “The Avengers” in 2012 was also the biggest debut for any Marvel picture. Another missing element from the film’s many confrontations was a bout between Captain America and none other than Black Widow, which was originally written but cut from the film. But after another incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability, headed by a governing body to oversee and direct the team. Scarlett Johansson, Don Cheadle, Jeremy Renner, Chadwick Boseman and Paul Rudd also co-star. Given that the Avengers: Infinity War 2 part movie will have an huge scale, including basically every Marvel superhero to date (whether the directors will include characters from TV shows, such as The Defenders still remains to be seen), it shouldn’t come as a surprise that some new characters will be taking part as well.
