The George Clooney-Julia Roberts reunion thriller “Money Monster” opened in third place with $14.8 million, followed by another debut, “The Darkness”, which earned $4.9 million.
Disney shares have declined 5.8% since Tuesday, but are flat today. Combined that with the $645 million it has made overseas and Civil War is quickly approaching the $1 billion mark worldwide. Indeed, it was another good weekend for Disney, as it turned in a one-two punch with Civil War and The Jungle Book yet again.
Marvel’s “Captain America: Civil War” finds Steve Rogers leading the newly formed team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. Money Monster did exceed projections, yet still came in third with $15 million.
The ten-day domestic total of $296 million for Captain America: Civil War has already generated more than the domestic totals of the other Captain America films during their entire theatrical runs – 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger brought in $177 million and 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier brought in $260 million.
Sony’s “Money Monster” was able to provide viable counter-programming aimed at adults, finishing well above recent forecasts. As of today, it’s the sixth highest grossing superhero film of all time, and perhaps even more amazingly, it’s outgrossed a movie called “Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice” by nearly $100 million.
Blumhouse’s “The Darkness” finished in fourth place and represented an attempt to exploit the horror niche with a modest spend via the High Top Releasing banner.
Following the second weekend, the film now stands at $940 million globally including the worldwide total to $645 million, according to BoxOfficeMojo.
Mother’s Day rounds out the top five and had a major drop from last week only grossing $3.3 million, raising the total to just under $30 million.
